How much does a year's worth of coffee cost?

How much money do I save by making coffee at home instead of buying it at a cafe? Let's start with some assumptions:

• A pound of coffee beans costs about $9 at the grocery store.
• According to LifeTips, a pound of coffee beans yields 30-40 cups of coffee. I'll assume 35 cups per pound.
• A cup of coffee costs about $2 at Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks.
• I drink 2 cups of coffee per day.
• A French press, tea kettle, mill, and coffee cup cost about $55.
• Water is basically free.

Based on these assumptions, coffee beans cost about $0.25 per cup. I drink about 730 cups per year, so I spend $183 per year on coffee beans. Add the equipment start up costs, and I would spend $238 per year on coffee, making it all at home.

At Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, I would spend $1460 per year on coffee. Making coffee at home saves me $1222! Now I understand how a coffee connoisseur can rationalize spend $700 on a home espresso machine and $200 on a mill.
