How to recover your QuickBooks product and license numbers

When you purchase QuickBooks through the Intuit web store, Intuit gives you an installer file to download, a license number, and a product number. The license number and product number are available on the web store for three years, after which Intuit removes the purchase record.

I wanted to move my QuickBooks installation to a new computer, but I had no record of my license number and product number. The solution? Run regedit and view registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Intuit/QuickBooksRegistration/15.0/pro. (I have a license for the "pro" version of QuickBooks.) Look for entries with names like InstallID and LicenseNumber. LicenseNumber is your license number, and InstallID is your product ID. I recovered my license and product numbers, installed QuickBooks on the new PC, and I was all set.

richard you are the man. thanks so much, after trying to find a solution, even after buying 2011 version nothing helped me get to my old files on my old computer. it was so old it couldn't handle the 2011 version. some way i deleted the 2006 from my computer, and did not have any info to put it back on. This neat little trick save my life, for real. thank you so much richard.

Nice - just saved me from having to contact support. I'm installing a fresh copy for a customer. They've found the CD but lost the paperwork (including the CD cover).

Richard,

I have Quickbooks 2004 installed on an old computer. I have a new llc, and need a simple way to track basic functions, and don't want to buy new copy. I can't find key to install. Can I find this code on my old computer to use to install on new system?

F2 worked as well! Thanks for the time save!

Pretty sure F2 won't give you both parts, just your serial number. Very sure you can't reinstall without the product ID also.

You need the product ID as well as the serial - F2 will not give you that part as far as I know.

Dear Anonymous March 12, 2013,

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you found me.

Unfortunately, I cannot provide QuickBooks tech support beyond the notes I've recorded here. I propose that you contact the software vendor and ask for help.

What really sux is that I had to reinstall QB2001 Pro and found that there was no more support from Intuit to allow me to manually update to R6. Since my QB files had all been updated to this last version of QB2001 Pro, and now it was reinstalled as the out-of-the-box R1 version, I could no longer access my QB files!! I was stuck! Intuit no longer had the R6 update file for download. What's more, they said that the newest versions of QB Pro could not read or update a file from that old a version of QB Pro, and that I would have to subsequently submit the file to them and pay them to update the file to eventually be able to be read by 2013 (niiice, this means they still have and use the older versions of QB (and each subsequent release) at headquarters tech support for just these types of problems, but YOU'RE never going to get access to them. Soooo I bought a 2004 version since it appeared that they still had support for this version -- but NNOOOOO, although they list it as supported still, they do not provide ANY updates/downloadable release files for it either!!!! Can you say "SCAM"?? However, the silver lining is that 2004 in its out-of-the-box install was able to read and update my old 2001 files with no problems. And using Richard's registry trick I was able to get QB2004 running (incidentally, if you do not insert a valid registration number, you WILL not get to use QB2004 after the 15th usage of the program!)

Thanks for the info Richard. I called QuickBooks technical support and they said license information was not written in the Windows registry like I thought it might be. I registered the software but it was 5 years ago, no record. Sharp technical support folks in India.

I have a Quick books 2007 premier version. When freshly installed it allows me 10 times to use the program and if I do not activate it it will go to view only mode. Then you are stuck with a program that you can not make changes to your file. I have found a way to get another 10 times thing. All you have to do is follow as richard instructed at top of this post. When you see all the registry items, right click on QBMode and MODIFY. replace whatever number is there with 0000a41e0a7c. This code will give you 9 times running the program in full mode. Once you run out of 9 times you can simply modify the registry and put the same number again for another 9 times. Everytime you open the QB it assigns a specific number to this registry and they are identical every time. I am assuming that the other version of QB also work on the same principle. So try it and good luck. This solution is not a permanent fix but it does get you going if you are stuck and cant get the QB tech support to assist you with real activation due to program no longer being supported.
